The little Kiosk

Ces kiosques jaunes sont partout dans le pays, en Grèce.
C'est l'endroit où vous pouvez acheter du tabac, des cigarettes, des journaux, des magazines, des chocolats, caramels, faire un appel téléphonique, et cent autres ...
Le kit provient d'un producteur grec, les Slingshotmodels.

Par contre, ce serait encore mieux si tu pouvais nous faire un "step by step" expliquant comment tu arrives à ce résultat (montage, patine, figurines etc etc).

Il n'y a pas de problème Philippos à rédiger en anglais. As specified previously, there is no problem to write in english. It is a pleasure to have you here on Tracks.

As I promised I will give you a “step by step” presentation of the little kiosk dio construction.

First of all you may want to know that the Greek word for the kiosk is “periptero”

Until early 70’s they looked like this:

Also I want to state that the techniques that I use, most probably are common to you.


1. The assembly of the resin kit took place in few hours and was trouble free. Some small bubbles in the resin were filled with putty and sanded without any problem.
After finishing this step, the kiosk was coated with gray primer. I use the HYCOTE primer, it is very thin and does not give any orange peel
effect. The next day I airbrushed the kiosk with Vallejo acrylics. The color you see is a mixture of yellow and little orange. The roof, as it is metal in reality, was airbrushed with black-brown acrylic, also from Vallejo.

Note: If it is not stated else, all colors I use are acrylics from Vallejo.


2. Now we go to weathering which is the part that I like most. First I used a mixture of old wood and new wood paint to depict the scratches on the kiosk’s wooden structure (the yellow ones). This was done with a 00 thin brush and with sponge with very small holes. For scratches at the “metal roll up” I used also a 00 thin brush and the black-brown color. After finishing this step the whole kiosk was airbrushed with Future. Next step was the pin wash of all cavities with oil colors. This was done several times, using black, row umber and burnt sienna colors.

On the metal roof I applied the two different rust colors, yellow rust and light rust with a sponge. Then with pigmets (orange and rust) and a thick brush I made the effect you see. I also put a small square piece of thin metal foil to depict that the roof was repaired.

3. Next step was to apply the advertisements. Some are given with the kit and the rest are home made.

The BMW tricycle.

The kit is the very well known Tamiya kit, but I have changed the side car with a scratch build one. Those tricycles with this custom side car were used for goods transport those times.





The BMW was painted in blue and was weathered with wood scratches, oil colors, oil pin wash, but generally was kept in “good condition”




The diorama.


As the kiosk is given closed, I had the idea to depict a scene where two men are changing the roof advertisements. Also as the kiosk is on a public square (park), so used a bench and some other figures.

The base is from the MiniArt’s “Street section with tram lines” kit, with appropriate configuration. Sections of the cobblestones were filled with putty to depict the worn asphalt layer that was used that period to cover the streets. The base was airbrushed with several gray tones, light to dark. Heavy pin wash with oil colors (black & row umber) was applied between the cobblestones and the plates of the pavement.

All figures are resin made, but one is converted to be suitable for the scene.






All figures were painted with acrylic colors. I am not very proud of the result, but this is what I can manage with figures painting.

Those are, more or less, the steps of this diorama construction.

I will be glad to answer any question that you fellow modelers may have.

Phil, you misunderstand something.

The 6th picture, the rear of a Sherman, is the cover picture of the box with the figure that I used to convert to a civilian.
I have posted this picture so you can see how the figure was converted, as we say the before and after...

L' image 6, l'arrière d'un Sherman, est l'image de couverture de la boîte avec le figurine que j'ai utilisé pour convertir à un civil.

I am thinking about it for a diorama in preparation. I'd like to start from existing figures from the market and transform them like you did. You step-by-step is very inspiring.

C'est justement l'occasion de se remettre à l'anglais, c'est un très bon exercice surtout quand le sujet nous permet de parler de notre passion du modélisme. J'avoue que j'ai du mal, mais en pratiquant, ça devrait aller de mieux en mieux.
